Sidmouth home to offer day care for dementia sufferers

PUBLISHED: 14:14 18 January 2012

A RESIDENTIAL care home in Sidmouth will offer day care to dementia sufferers.

Malden House, in Sidford Road, will stage an open day on Friday, January 27, from 11am to 3pm.

Sessions on dementia awareness, where individuals can find out more about the condition, and meetings on paying for care and options available, will take place.

Bosses hope the service can help fill a gap left by the ‘closure’ of Stowford Lodge to day patients.

Leah-Marie Mills, Malden House manager, said she’s attended meetings regarding the loss of services at the Sedemuda Road NHS facility.

She said: “We feel, given all of the press surrounding the closure of Stowford Lodge, it would be great to show the community that there are other options available, Malden House being one of these.”

She added the residential home has carried out extensive consultations and now offers day care, which also includes permanent and respite care and support.

The scheme aims to support individuals to stay in their own homes for longer, maintaining or improving their well-being and independence as well as having access to stimulating and meaningful social activities.

The day care service is offered from 10am to 4pm every Friday, and additional days can be arranged if required, and is aimed at elderly individuals, including people with dementia.
