SIDMOUTH’S Hopper Bus celebrated notching up its 10,000th passenger of the season on Monday – and ahead of schedule.

Holidaymaker Betty Fox’s first ride on the free service saw her handed a surprise bouquet of flowers as she boarded at the Three Cornered Plot.

Shocked but delighted Betty and husband Brian, of Fleet, stopped in on the town and liked it so much they decided to stay for the rest of their holiday.

The passenger landmark came a week earlier than last year despite the soggy summer.

“We are on track to get near the 12,000 passengers mark – depending on the weather,” said Hopper secretary Councillor John Dyson.

Also present at the presentation were popular driver Jim Tucker and Hopper Bus Working Party chairman Tony Reed – who have been involved with the service since it began nine years ago.
