THE future of Sidmouth Library’s valued leader is uncertain as county council chiefs look to save millions of pounds.
Library managers across the region face having to apply for new roles as some positions will be scrapped, Devon County Council (DCC) said this week.
The authority said that popular Gill Spence, in charge at Sidmouth’s Blackmore Drive hub, “will have the same opportunity to apply for other available posts” in a smaller and cheaper management structure.
The council says the move is necessary to ensure none of its libraries close.
“Staff affected by the restructure have the opportunity to apply for the new posts. The council has to cut �54.6 million from its total budget in response to Government spending reductions.
Ms Spence declined to comment on the situation but said Sidmouth Library would continue to deliver a sterling service whatever happens.
DCC is currently undertaking two consultations over its library services.
The authority has asked the public when and how they use the library and invited suggestions how it could be used for other purposes. The second, just with staff, is intent on reducing the number of managers the council has across its service.
