A DRAG race book written by a Sidmouth man has topped the motor sports chart on a popular online website.

Brian Taylor's book 'Crazy Horses: The History of British Drag Racing' is outselling all other motoring related books on Amazon including autobiographies by Richard Hammond and Sir Jackie Stewart.

The book, which took Brian, of Trinity Court, three years to complete, has been given a five star rating on the website after going on sale in April.

Brian, 67, said: "It's quite unexpected. I knew the book would do well but England is the home of Formula One and rallying, so for the best selling Amazon book to be about drag racing is amazing."

The book was officially launched in May at Santa Pod Raceway in Bedfordhire and some of Brian's drag racing heroes turned up such as DJ and television presenter Dave Lee Travis; Bob Keith, captain of the American team in 1965 and drag racer Harold Bull.

Brian added: "It was absolutely fantastic. It was great to have some of the real pioneers there and we actually ran out of copies of the book!"

The best seller is also on sale at Sidmouth shop Paragon Books and has been selling to locals and visitors alike.

The coming year is expected to be a whirlwind for Brian as his busy schedule includes three book launches in America.

The drag race enthusiast is also intending to start writing his second book, about the developments in the sport during the period 1963-65, early next year.

Another project Brian, a retired professional motoring writer, is embarking on is the restoration of an Allard Chrysler Dragster, Europe's first dragster, which is currently on display in the National Motor Museum.

Brian and other drag race enthusiasts are currently raising sponsorship money and hope the project- supported by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, the patron of the museum- will be complete by next spring.

Once the car is raring to go, it will be one of the oldest original dragsters in the world in working condition.

Brian added: "I think I'm busier now than when I was working but it's a lot more fun!
