THE Sidmouth Branch of the Junior Missionary Service League, after only a few weeks of existence, showed promise last Monday evening of real enthusiasm, in the work which they have in hand. They gave a most enjoyable entertainment of instrumental and vocal music followed by a Missionary Play given by members from Exeter, called 'Revenge,' illustrating the work of a Mission Hospital on the Afghan Frontier.

INQUIRIES into the necessity for house-to-house collections by St Dunstan's, which were stated to have taken place recently at Sidmouth, were advocated at the autumn conference of the Otter group of the British Legion. A resolution from the Sidmouth branch suggested that, in view of the fact that St Dunstan's received a percentage of Poppy Day receipts, they should refrain from making further public appeals.

THIS afternoon on the Ham the first main event of this years carnival will take place when the Queen of Sidmouth Carnival 1959, Miss Gillian Phillips, will crown the Children's Carnival Prince and Princess, Paul Thompson and Margaret Pring. Before this, there will be a fancy dress parade through the main streets of the town, headed by the Cuddy's Nest Jazz Band.

AT a well-attended meeting of the East Devon Branch of the Men of the Trees at the Winter Garden last week for the showing of excellent films of great interest to tree-lovers and gardeners, Mr A Jenkins, the chairman, said that by invitation from the Sidmouth Urban District Council, the Sid Vale Association in co-operation with the Men of the Trees, had submitted recommendations regarding tree preservation in the locality.

SIDMOUTH has again blossomed triumphantly in the Britain in Bloom competition to be judged the top small town in Britain. The news of Sidmouth's win, announced on Thursday afternoon at a ceremony in was telephoned to the Herald by Mrs Joy Seward just after she had accepted the award - a cut glass vase - on behalf of the Sidmouth In Bloom Committee.

WORSHIPPERS at Sidmouth Methodist Church are waiting to hear whether it will be necessary to dismantle and rebuild a wall of the 100-year-old building in order to cure a bulge which has appeared on the inside. Scaffolding has been erected inside the church to protect the wall which faces Sidmouth's High Street, from further deterioration.
