SINGERS and musicians are being sought to bring a planned community play to life.

The Sidmouth Mummers have joined forces with townsfolk for Johnny Jacks War, which they hope will debut at Sidford Social Hall in November.

The production, scribed by Branscombe playwright Peter Wilson, revolves around the effect the first few months of the First World War has on a small Devon village.

Community workshops in January proved a success for organisers who now need further help.

“We are looking to put together a small ‘pit orchestra’ to accompany the performances as well as a series of workshops and rehearsals,” said the Sidmouth Mummers’ Henry Piper- who is also known as ‘Old Father Christmas.’

He added: “We are currently looking for a piano or keyboard player, and a piano accordion player- both of whom will eventually join with banjo, concertina, fiddle and percussion for the actual performances.

“Some music reading ability would be helpful, but, as the reading element would probably be fairly small, ‘ear’ players would be just as welcome,” added Henry.

Male and female singers from the Sidmouth area, interested in taking part, are also being sought.

Experience of singing in musical theatre or on the folk or general entertainment scene would be an advantage, but is not essential.

“We already have a large and enthusiastic cast,” said Henry.

“Workshops prior to formal rehearsals have been great fun.”
