FILMING of a traditional mumming play took place at The Swan Inn, Sidmouth, on Thursday as part of a new TV series featuring Bergerac star John Nettles.Although the actor was not in town for the performance, he will be meeting a number of groups being featured in a new ITV series John Nettles Applauds, due to be shown this summer.Around 10 members of Sidmouth Traditional Mummers donned their outfits to run through their Christmas play, put on in the pub during FolkWeek.Led by Henry Piper, aka Old Father Christmas, the group is one of a number to be featured in the series that focuses on the performing arts in the South West.Being made for ITV by Pug Films, director John Loveless said: "John Nettles is a Cornishman and a great lover of the West Country."He has already done two series, one about John Betjeman and one looking at the arts. This looks at the performing arts - everything from mummers to top West End actors such as Patricia Hodge and Timothy West."Mr Piper said: "They were looking for mummers, saw our website, and thought we had a lot to offer.
