Sidmouth open house for Sid Vale Association

FOR those readers who value the countryside and coast, Sid Vale Association’s Open House event on (Saturday) is a must.

On at Kennaway House, Coburg Road, from 12.30pm until 4.30pm, SVA will have representatives available to talk about its work.

Since 1846, the association has encouraged residents to voluntarily protect the Sid Valley environment.

It exists primarily for the conservation of the local countryside and heritage and aims to protect Sidmouth’s most valuable assets – its green valley and heritage coast – for the benefit of its residents.

During the past 165 years, SVA’s activities have become diverse. Its Landscape Appeal in 1987 raised �220,000 to preserve green land on Salcombe Hill and Peak Hill in perpetuity.

More recently, land in the Byes and at Peaslands-Knapp has been given the same protection, and is much enjoyed by local residents.

The Reverend Handel Bennett, SVA vice chairman, said: “Our green valley is reflected in the eyes and thoughts of building developers who want to turn it into an urban sprawl.

“The designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty must be respected and protected by EDDC planners.

“Currently, the coalition government has given no firm commitment to uphold the AONB, but intends to give ‘a presumption in favour’ of commercial development regardless of the views of environmentalists.”

He said land in the valley was for the enjoyment and recreation of residents and the many visitors who bring economic benefit to the town.

He added: “If you are not already one of our 2,400 members, we invite you to come along to Kennaway House, see our exhibition, watch our presentation, talk to members of our executive committee and share your ideas with us for protecting and conserving all that is best in our town and valley.”
