A PEACE event – possibly the first that’s ever taken place in Sidmouth – has been arranged for Saturday, September 21.

Coinciding with the United Nations Day of Peace, the Sidmouth event comprises a minute’s silence, films, talks and interaction at the Old Meeting Unitarian Chapel and adjacent hall on All Saints Road.

The event begins at midday in the church, where the UN global minute of silence will be observed, followed by an opportunity for people to reflect on peace through prayer, music and discussion.

A series of films and discussions will take place in the church hall from 2pm.

Films include a short video of people filmed in Exeter, Bath and Bristol, talking about peace, and Prem Rawat speaking to a Nordic peace conference.

Other speakers at the church hall include Kelsang Chönyi from Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Exeter and Emily McIvor from the Green Party.

Sidmouth’s peace event has been organised by Maggie Baldwin, 66, a retired nurse, care worker and former Sidmouth town councillor.

“I think it’s going to be a nice afternoon and poignant with the situation in Syria,” said Maggie. “I don’t think it’s ever been marked officially in Sidmouth before that I know about. Hopefully, this could be an ongoing celebration on International Day of Peace.”

All are welcome to attend. For more details, contact Maggie on 0788 2751096.
