A SIMPLE question from a Sidmouth pensioner left Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg red-faced in a television interview this week.

Wally Cotgrave, 70 , of Winslade Road asked how much an average couple on the state pension receive a week, to which Mr Clegg replied "I think it's about 30 quid, isn't it?".

The full basic state pension is actually £90.70 a week for a single person and £145.05 a week for a couple, with individual circumstances affecting the amount people get.

Mr Cotgrave said: "Politicians are out of touch with what happens on the ground, they don't live in a small road in a local town. We always ask them political questions that they are well versed in answering. Mine obviously discomforted him.
