SIDMOUTH certainly Wore it Pink on Friday, getting wholeheartedly behind Cancer Research UK's breast cancer awareness month campaign.

More than 40 businesses backed the fundraiser and turned the town centre pink with pink balloons, T-shirts and wigs - even stringing up pink bras across Fore Street.

Lenny Titherington, manager of the Cancer Research UK shop, said: "It was a fantastic day and I am proud of the community we have here. A lot of people have kept their collection boxes to put out for another week.

"We are hoping to make a lot of money and I would like to thank the whole community who took part.

"Everyone had a lot of fun, and the string of bras was taken in the spirit it was intended."

She praised Philippa Dunn and Kim Allbrighton for their hard work in getting businesses behind the day.

At Elements hair salon, Wayne Perry had a close shave - of his hair - to raise money, while Tony Phillips had his hair dyed pink at The Anchor by Chloe Proctor.

Neil Bavington from Sid Com endured his pink wig, despite being allergic to it, and held an evening karaoke fundraiser, while Mark Feeney of Trumps sported a bra to draw attention to the day.

At Radway Cinema pink balloons containing prizes were being sold to raise funds and Lenny's shop made 114 selling cakes.

"We also had more than 100 pink scarves people had knitted to sell, and a lot have gone, we did very well," she said.

Special FX hair salon held a prize draw this week as well as dressing for the occasion on Friday, and there were muffins with pink cherries on top selling at Vinnicombes.

Sidmouth College students went to town with their Pink Day outfits and events.

"I am already getting things in place for next year," said Lenny, who will announce how much was raised later next month.
