COMMUNITY spirit that helped land Sidmouth’s floral features a record amount of regional awards will need to defy council cuts as the town approaches a Bloomin’ big landmark.

Sidmouth in Bloom celebrates its 40th anniversary next year, and driving forces hope residents will rally to ensure East Devon District Council (EDDC) cutbacks don’t hamper the special occasion.

Speaking to around 100 people at Sidmouth in Bloom’s awards evening last Thursday, president Joy Seward said: “Sidmouth without flowers would just not be the same. We have a lovely town but I do feel the flowers make it even more beautiful. We are so lucky to live here.

“It is going to be hard with EDDC cutting costs. We hope to have the floral bed in the Triangle planted to commemorate 40 years and are doing all we can.”

Joy thanked nine residents whose open garden exploits bagged the Bloom committee 900. More than 300 special tea towels have also been sold in aid of the cause.

Sidmouth Town Council was thanked for taking over flower beds, which faced not being planted.

“They have been a wonderful support to us and we hope they will be for our very special year,” said Joy.

“This year Sidmouth in Bloom have been awarded more (South West in Bloom) cups and trophies than they ever have,” said town council chairman Peter Sullivan, who hailed the achievement “absolutely amazing.”
