AS PART of their literacy week, pupils at St Nicholas Junior School, Woolbrook, enjoyed a puppet performance of The Tin Forest, a picture book by Helen Ward.

The story is of an old man who lives amid rubbish and scrap but dreams of living in a real forest.

He creates a flower, then a forest, from scrap materials, encouraging a bird to drop a seed which grows, eventually transforming the area into a beautiful forest.

Children from each class were chosen to take part in a music workshop using 'junk' instruments provided by Puppetcraft, and around 30 children played at the two performances.

In the afternoon pupils created their own puppets from recyclable materials during an art workshop.

During the week children, with teachers, joined four family groups to recreate the story on banners to be hung in the school hall.

One Year Six class used electricity and recyclable materials to create a flower that lights up, while other year groups organised drama and dance activities, poetry and other art work linked to the text.

On Monday each class displayed and presented an item to the rest of the school in assembly and parents were invited to look at these during the afternoon.
