AS The Poppy Appeal was launched on Saturday, members of Sidmouth’s branch of the Royal British (RBL) have reminded residents they support all armed forces servicemen and women - including those currently in Iraq and Afghanistan.

With attentions set to switch towards Remembrance Day commemorations on Thursday, Sidmouth RBL chairman Dave O’Connor told Herald readers: “It has been brought to the notice of some of our members (an opinion) that the Legion only looks after World War One and World War Two personnel. I can assure you that is not the case.

“Your local branch will always support all service personnel, the royal charter indicates this also includes ex-servicemen and women who are not members of the Legion.

“I believe around the country the are approximately 54 charities helping service personnel, they all do a splendid job, but the Royal British Legion has and always will lead from the front showing how much we care.”
