THE 2013 Sidmouth Regatta event proved a huge success, and has raised more than £1,000 for the RNLI.

“It went very well indeed,” said Oliver Salter of the Regatta Committee, which organises the annual event.

“It was much beter than last year’s turnout. The weather helped, obviously, although generally the town was quieter than normal.”

On the Saturday there were sailing races, a three-legged race and a raft race.

Eight rafts – a much improved entry on last year – battled it out, with close racing all the way. However the lifeguards team, which originally came second, were disqualified for having an illegal craft.

A cycle, donated by WV Fish, was raffled with a good response. It was won by a visitor staying at the Royal York.

In the evening there was a spectacular fireworks display, with an 8-in mortar that “lit up all of Sidmouth”.

Sunday was the main day for children’s events. These ranged from pavement art drawing to a fancy-dress competition with prizes – donated by Gliddons toy shop - for the judges’ favourites.

There was also a fiercely competed treasure hunt with nearly 40 entries.
