THE annual meeting of Sidmouth Boy Scouts was held at the Manor Hall on Saturday afternoon. The annual report was moved and adopted. Scoutmaster Colwill in a few remarks referred to the economies effected in their camping last year, and spoke with gratitude of the help received.

THERE was a large congregation at the Parish Church on Monday evening, when a Service of Confirmation was held by the Bishop of Crediton (who was accompanied by the Rural Dean). The Bishop in the course of a short and earnest address to the candidates, reminded them they were there to receive the Gift of God promised through His Holy Spirit, offering their hearts and souls to Him.

SIDMOUTH'S Carnival for 1959 will be held on Thursday, October 8. This was confirmed at the first meeting of the Carnival Committee for 1959, held last week in the Liberal Hall. In general the committee agreed to follow on the lines laid down by the very successful carnivals of 1957 and 1958. Candidates for the 1959 Carnival Queen and her attendants would be selected at local dances during the early summer.

IN a talk to Sidmouth Rotarians at the Royal London Hotel, Mr Norman Honey, Deputy Governor of Exeter prison, referred to the alarming increase in crime with the resultant increase in prison and Borstal populations during the past 18 months or two years. It was difficult to understand, he said how it was in times of comparatively full employment, we had that situation where the prison authorities were forced to go out searching for more establishments because their institutions were so full.

AFTER only ten years a �300,000 sewerage system installed in Sidmouth has been declared inadequate to cope with the town's future needs. This news, given to the East Devon District Council's Planning Committee on Tuesday, led to Councillor Percy Spencer accusing those responsible for forecasting Sidmouth's needs of not carrying out the job properly.

FORMER Sidmouth College pupil Suzy French was among the lucky trainees of an art and craft scheme at Glastonbury to be chosen to be presented to the Princess of Wales on Tuesday. Suzy spent five minutes chatting with Princess Diana when she opened the government-sponsored facility.
