WAR veterans, members of the armed forces and uniformed organisations, including emergency services, will take part in this year's Remembrance Parade in Sidmouth.

Although the parish church will not be open in time for the annual Remembrance Day service, the parade to the war memorial will not be affected.

Those taking part will meet outside Sidmouth Conservative Club by 10.20am and will march off at 10.40am, led by Sidmouth Town Band through the town to the war memorial to join members of Sidmouth Town Council and in time for the laying of wreaths at 11am.

The Royal British Legion's parade marshal Pat Weavin, will also act as standard bearer.

The service, conducted by the Reverend Prebendary David James, will be held at the United Reformed Church, Chapel Street, and refreshments will be available at the War Memorial Club.

The Garden of Remembrance service will take place at 10am on Friday, November 6, and wooden crosses for the service are available from the Poppy Appeal table during the RBL's Poppy Appeal, which starts tomorrow (Saturday, October 24) until Remembrance Day on November 11.

The town's shops have been invited to take part in this year's Poppy Appeal Window display and for the first time smaller shops will have their own silver cup to vie for.

Under its motto For their sake, wear a Poppy the Legion's 2009 Poppy Appeal in Devon will highlight the need for support for those wounded and bereaved during the conflict in Afghanistan.

Since 2001 more than 220 members of the Armed Forces have been killed, and more than 300 wounded in the Helmand Province alone.
