Rotary quiz night raises £100 for Sidmouth RNLI branch
THE RNLI is going from strength to strength as the finest rescue service in the world, John Govier, the chairman of the Sidmouth branch, said this week.
But, like all charities in the recession, it was feeling the pinch with an average income drop of about 10 per cent, writes Kingsley Squire.
That was why he was especially delighted to receive an ‘unexpected gift’ from the Sidmouth War Memorial Club of £100 raised there at a Rotary Club quiz night.
He thanked the club for choosing the RNLI, saying it evoked memory of the Penlee lifeboat disaster 30 years ago and the generous response by Sidmouth to the relief fund for dependants of the crew who lost their lives.
“It had a profound effect on all of us,” said Mr Govier. “People were very generous then. So thank you all for once again supporting the RNLI.”
