Sidmouth will be represented in Belgium as part of a special anniversary parade commemorating 100 years since the end of the First World War.
John Hayes and Terry Paltridge from the town’s branch of the Royal British Legion will head to Ypres this weekend and visit a number of battlefields and cemeteries visited by representatives in 1928.
The event also marks 90 years since the legion’s first great pilgrimage and is set to bring together around 2,200 representatives and dignitaries from August 5 to 9.
John will carry the branch’s standard and Terry will lay a wreath to remember fallen soldiers at Ypres’s Menin Gate next Wednesday (August 8).
A ceremony will take place there to mark the launch of the hundred days offensive and in remembrance of those who never returned. The Royal British Legion believe the four-day event will be one of the largest in its history.
