Sidmouth firefighters are driving round in a bigger, newer engine with built-in kit that can make water ‘seven times wetter’.

Crews received training last week with the compressed air foam system, which combines water, ‘class A’ foam and compressed air in the correct ratio to create a foam.

A spokesman said: “Done correctly, it will make water seven times wetter.

“This is a great fire-fighting media allowing firefighters to knock back fire quicker and at a further distance from the fire.

“It also has great properties for fire suppression making it very useful on thatch and gorse fires.

“If you would like to know more, give us a shout at one of the summer fetes we will be attending.”

The new engine has also the same equipment but is bigger and newer.

The first summer fete the crews will be at is in Tipton St John next Saturday (July 8).
