THE REPLACEMENT of a vandalised fountain at Blackmore Gardens with a less vulnerable design was formally unveiled last week.

The previous fountain, which was a tiered wedding cake design, was vandalised in April- the second time in three years.

It had been pushed on to the floor and sustained significant damage which spurred the Town Council into re-thinking the design.

The new contemporary stone monolith fountain, donated by Sidmouth Garden Centre, has a less ornate design and Councillor Jeffrey Turner hopes it will stand more of a chance against vandals.

He said: "I am very pleased with the new fountain.

"It was installed about three weeks ago and it is beginning to look more natural now as it is greening over a bit.

"People have said the new design is a good idea. I can't say it is completely vandal proof as nothing is but is definitely less vulnerable.

"It is more contemporary and in-keeping with modern ideas on garden fountains and ornaments and people are putting similar types in their gardens."

Ian Barlow, manager of Sidmouth Garden Centre attended the unveiling last Friday along with Chairman of Sidmouth Town Council, Tom Cox, vice-chairman, Peter Sullivan and Councillor Jeffrey Turner.
