The town’s young people can now make the most of thousands of pounds worth of new equipment at Sidmouth Youth Centre.

More than £4,600 has been made available through the Parishes Together Fund for Sidmouth youngsters.

The money has be used to pay for a film club projector and screen, arts and crafts supplies, bicycle repair equipment, laptops, other computer equipment and more.

In 2014, Sidmouth Youth Centre was closed by Devon County Council but was re-opened when Sidmouth Town Council stepped up to own and manage it, in partnership with Young Devon.

When it re-opened, young people attending the centre were keen for replacement equipment.

The town council applied for some money from the fund, ran by East Devon District Council and Devon County Council.

The pot of cash is a joint initiative aimed at providing financial solutions for local issues.

Parish and town councils are all invited to work together to apply for funding.

Ben Feasey, a young Devon youth work co-ordinator at Sidmouth Youth Centre, said: “This money has really helped set the centre up again after the closure.

“We have used the money to create new activities and sessions to really help our young people access fun and interactive provision.

“These things allow young people to develop better relationships with our workers which in turn creates a person that they can turn to in times of need.”

Councillor Ian McKenzie-Edward, Sidmouth Town Council’s chairman, said: “Supporting our young people has always been a cornerstone of Sidmouth Town Council policy and I am pleased that this valuable funding is supporting our partnership with Young Devon in providing a place for younger people to learn and relax.”

Councillor Stuart Hughes said: it was great to see the funding being used to help support young people in Sidmouth.

He added: “The scheme encourages local communities to identify projects that will make a positive difference to their local area, and we’re encouraging everyone to make use of the money still available.”
