SIDMOUTH Scouts have launched a fundraising drive to make their dream of a new headquarters a reality.

Leaders say a new base at Salcombe Regis Recreational Field – granted planning permission in December – will benefit more than 100 youngsters and scores more on a waiting list.

They are yet to calculate a definitive fundraising target – but it will be thousands of pounds.

“The new premises will mean that we will no longer have to beg, borrow or rent out other halls,” said 1st Sid Vale Scout Group chairman Gareth Hughes.

“To get planning permission was step one.

“We believe the opportunity to have our ‘home base’ at the field goes a long way in supporting the leaders with their programmes, and the environment up there is absolutely perfect for the enjoyment, the learning, and the development of the young people who make up our numbers.”

A new headquarters would benefit a total of 129 Explorer Scouts, Scouts, Cub Scouts and Beaver Scouts aged from six to 14. There is a waiting list of 40 youngsters.

“Locally, we have had to impose waiting lists, mainly because of the restricted space of our hall and the position of the Manor Road site, with the dangers of youngsters spilling out onto a car park,” said Gareth.

“The new building and facilities will make us more cohesive as a group and will enrich the scouting experience for members.

“The new facility will offer the potential for any future growth in numbers and will be a lasting legacy for the people of Sidmouth.”

Scouts will be counting on the generosity of Sidmouth residents when they stage events like summer fetes and shoeshine and car park fundraising at Waitrose.

“We know the people of Sidmouth care about the youth and are very supportive of us,” said Gareth.
