BLUEPRINTS to transform a sea-front Sidmouth flat into a caf or restaurant have been given the go-ahead by planning chiefs.

Owners of flat one, The Marine, in The Esplanade, said late night noise had prompted the proposals and they hope planning permission to allow for a change of use at the ground floor premises will give the town a jobs boost.

East Devon District Council (EDDC) planning officers have granted proposals planning permission last week.

In plans, Seaside Apartments claimed “exceptional” noise rendered the flat’s use as holiday accommodation as “untenable.”

Blueprints from a Sidmouth-based chartered surveyor revealed: “The noise levels have been monitored by EDDC officers following complaints by adjacent hoteliers.

“This disturbance materially diminished the viable rent which a property in this prime location would normally attract. The ground floor flat is more susceptible to noise and for this reason an alternative use is proposed.” Owners said a caf or restaurant would be “compatible” with businesses in the vicinity, and offer full and part-time positions.
