Sidmouth shopkeepers back Royal street party fun
All systems go for Sidmouth’s Royal Wedding street party
IT is all systems go for next Friday’s Royal Wedding street party in Sidmouth town centre.
Old Fore Street and New Street will be closed from 2pm to 8pm, both leading to the Market Place, Church Street and Prospect Place which will also be closed.
Local businesses have backed the party.
John Gilliland, manager of Shauls Bakery, Fore Street, is donating two enormous cakes, which will be on display in their window on Prince William and Kate Middleton’s big day – April 29.
One will be “right-royally” decorated, and each will serve 150 people. They will be cut in the Market Place half-way through the afternoon and Sidmouth Chamber of Commerce members, who have organised the celebrations, will deliver portions to each table.
Some 120 tables will be decorated and filled with partygoers on the day dressed in red, white and blue. As well as taking a picnic and drink, those who have booked tables are reminded to take chairs as well.

A host of local entertainers have agreed to perform, led by MC Mike Dibble, the current King of Chit.
Those performing include Sidmouth Town Band, who will be joined by singer Val Howells for rousing and patriotic ending to the event.
There will be a chance to join in songs with Val and also Frank Symington, and for jazz lovers there will be City Steam Jazz Band, a walking band, performing.
For younger partygoers there will be Elfic the Jester and other entertainers, together with a free bouncy castle.
Prizes will be given for the best decorated table and best dressed person.
“We would like to give a huge thank you Matt at The Anchor for selling the tickets, which was not an easy task,” said Chamber secretary Sylvia Brownlee.
The Wurzles will play at The Anchor, Old Fore Street, on Saturday, April 30, from 7.30pm. Entry �10.
Other businesses offering Royal Wedding goodies are Sidmouth Stationery, Temple Street, Party Pack (07989803674), Tasty Baguette, Dove Lane and Taste of Sidmouth, Old Fore Street (pre-ordered platters), Bridge House Wines, Fore Street, selling wine in plastic bottles and Vinnicombes Bakery, High Street, will open all day, offering discount on orders for bread, rolls and cake.
The Dairy Shop, Church Street, will stay open until 6pm to serve full afternoon tea - eat in or take out, plus a top up of tea and coffee service.
