A Sidmouth family has thanked shoppers for their support to raise money for heart screenings in the town.

Waitrose customers supported Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) through the store’s Community Matters scheme, helping to raise £494 for the charity.

The money was presented to the Jon Hayman Memorial Fund, which was set up by Marion and Robert Hayman after their son Jon, 27, died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome in 2013.

The family has been fundraising for the charity for four years and in June funded 100 free health screenings for young people aged 14 to 35.

Marion collected the cheque ahead of the charity’s awareness week, which runs from November 18 until November 26.

She said: “Although this is a national charity, the screening is very much a local event. I have, and am continuing to raise awareness of CRY and the importance of screening.

“I would like to thank Waitrose and the customers who supported this cause.”
