Two golds and silver for first Taste of the West competitors from Sidmouth

MANGO Yoghurt ice cream has been judged the best in the West – and it is made by sisters in Sidmouth.

Hazel Jones and Laura Bennett, run Taste of Sidmouth, Fore Street, and decided to enter this year’s Taste of the West awards.

It paid off. They won two golds and a silver and their special ice cream won them the Champion ice cream makers title.

It was served to food critic Nigel Barden and others attending the award ceremony at Haselbury Mill, Crewkerne.

“It is our first year of entering, so we are really pleased, said Hazel, who attended the awards evening.

“We entered three flavours and got two golds and a silver. All the golds got compared and we are champion ice cream makers.”

The other varieties they submitted were Ferrero Rocher and Vanilla. The sisters dream up their unique flavours and make their ice cream.

Otter Valley Dairies won a gold for its chocolate ice cream and Fields of Sidmouth won a gold medal for its coffee shop.

The competition covers six counties in the West and, said Hazel: “I am pleased to see Sidmouth so well represented at the awards.”
