STAFF at two Sidmouth stores saw a year of fundraising net more than 2,000 for a charity striving to help terminally ill children and their families.

A kind-hearted waitress walked for 100 miles to raise more than half of the sterling sum.

Coffee shop worker Becca Mawson was joined by colleagues at Fields of Sidmouth and workers at Monday’s Child in thinking of ways to boost their charity of the year, Ellie’s Haven, throughout 2010.

The Cornwall-based cause is working to create a purpose built holiday retreat for families from the South West with children who have life limiting or life threatening illnesses.

Becca, 44, raised 1,250 when she took on scorching temperatures last summer and spent every other evening for a month clocking up the mammoth mile total on a Bickwell Valley route.

She was on hand to present a cheque for 2,250 to Ellie and her dad Nigel Libby last week.

Events at Fields and Monday’s Child throughout last year included a quiz night, raffles, cake sales, recycling printer toner cartridges, a corporate Christmas card and a gift wrapping service.

Customers boosted the bid by generously donating at collection tins at the stores’ tills.

Bosses praised Becca, and those who sponsored her, for raising the “lion’s share” of the total.

Trevor Roberts, managing director of Fields said: “Despite the economic climate, the staff have once again done a tremendous job in raising a significant amount for a very worthwhile charity.

“Meeting Nigel and Ellie Libby was very humbling and small charities like Ellie’s Haven need all the help that they can get.”
