Competitors will be taking to the water this weekend as part of a new event supported by the Keith Owen Fund.

Sidmouth Surf Lifesaving Club will host the Longest Day Ocean Challenge on Sunday, bringing together participants of all ages from across the South West.

The event will test
paddlers in a series of ocean-based events between 1pm and 3pm.

Dave Manley, the club chairman and race director, said: “The idea of the event is to raise the profile of Sidmouth as a water sports location. Our aim is for this to be an annual and growing event supporting tourism businesses in the town, and this is a chance for residents and visitors to see Sidmouth’s athletes compete against the best from the South West.”

He thanked the Sid Vale Association and the Keith Owen Fund for supporting the inaugural event.

Mr Manley added: “Their backing has been instrumental in the club’s continued growth and popularity.”
