Sidmouth trio’s epic walk for Children’s Hospice SW

A PAIR of Sidmouth fundraisers and their four-legged friend are gearing up to walk 630 miles to help terminally ill children and their families.

Russ Smith, Liz Hayman and Fizzy the dog hope an epic trek from Minehead to Poole will raise thousands of pounds for Children’s Hospice South West.

The plucky trio will be away from home for up to two months when they take on the South West Coastal Footpath from April 25.

They have invited residents in the Sidmouth area to sponsor the bid, join them, or follow their antics on an internet blog.

Granddad-of-six Russ, 64, and wife Gill were founder members of the Sidmouth Friends of Children’s Hospice South West group.

“The charity is very close to our hearts. Learning of the work they did reduced us to tears,” said Russ, “We’ve been giving money ever since.

“I’ve always wanted to do the South West Coastal Footpath. It is a challenge- we’ll be trying to walk 12 to 15 miles a day. Ascents along the route amount to four times the height of Everest.

“It’s a big adventure along one of the most beautiful part of Britain. We hope to give a few people a few laughs and to raise some money.

“I’m a retired chiropodist so our feet will be alright!” added Russ.

Ex- nurse Liz, 49, a mum-of-three, added: “We want to enjoy the people side of things as well as the exercise.

“It’s very exciting. We’ve had a lot of enthusiasm, donations and sponsorship from people.

“We’re back-packing it. If people offer us a bed for the night along the way that would be great. We hope people join us.”

She added her two-year-old Border Collie Fizzy was looking forward to the massive walk.

Children’s Hospice South West cares for youngsters with illnesses which mean they will die before reaching adulthood. The charity provides expert care for children and their families.
