Sidmouth youngsters learn skills to stay safe at sea

Scores of youngsters have had timely training in how to spot dangers on the beach and in the ocean from Sidmouth Surf Life Saving Club.
Some 58 Sidmouth Primary School pupils and 32 cubs joined a two-hour session to gain the skills and knowledge they need to keep themselves and others safe this summer.
Surf lifesaving club chairman and head coach Dave Manley said: “One of the objectives of the club is to help reduce drownings on British beaches.
“Prevention through water safety education is the key to achieving this.
“Sessions like this with children, just before they break up for the summer holidays, means they have the knowledge fresh in the minds as they head off on holiday or to their local beach.
“The skills we teach have the potential not only to save themselves but also their family or a member of the public – should they get into trouble in the ocean.”
