DESPITE persistent rain, nearly 1,000 was raised for the Campaign 2010 mini-bus appeal on Sunday.

Volunteers from Sidmouth Living With Cancer Support Group manned 20 tables at The Bowd, Sidmouth, for a massive table-top sale, and made 980 towards the appeal.

SLWC member Annie Reddish, who organised the event, said: "The weather was awful, raining on and off, and our members braved the rain to help. I didn't think we would do as well as we did so I am delighted."

Toys and games, bric-a-brac, videos, electrical items, clothes, books and jewellery attracted people during the afternoon and a donated gazebo helped keep helpers dry.

"Bill and Evelyn Lankester brought their camper van and kept us supplied with sandwiches and hot coffee and I would like to thank everyone who made donations and helped."

Annie thanked Belinda and Paul at The Bowd pub, Paul Burton for fetching and carrying items, St John Ambulance Hall who lent tables and all others who lent equipment, helped and donated money.
