Two lucky local artists are celebrating having won an art prize draw competition.

In a bid to entice shoppers back through the door after a very tough year for businesses, South West Art in Sidmouth — art materials specialist retailer and picture framer — held a prize draw for customers who placed an order before the end of March.

Local artists Laura Boyd, based in Colaton Raleigh, and Anna Brewster from Sidmouth, each won a wooden box of professional quality watercolour paints worth more than £125.

Lynsey Pickwell from South West Art, which has been trading in Sidmouth for more than 15 years, said: “We wanted to thank everyone that supported us and kept up our moral over the last year.

“It has been a tricky one (to put it mildly) for everyone, but without the support of our lovely customers I’m not sure we would have survived either financially or mentally, and we were incredibly pleased to be able to reopen and feel like we are a step closer to normality again!

“We spent the first lockdown building our website and trading our car in for a van, in order to remain as functional as possible throughout the pandemic, both in and out of lockdown, providing a local delivery and Click&Collect service during the lockdowns, not only for orders through the new website, but also for telephone and email contacts from our regulars, in order to keep our customers creating and using their art to stay safe and sane during all the national restrictions that we have all had to adhere to since March 2020.

“Like many others, we have had to constantly adapt the business to accommodate the changing needs and restrictions, whilst ensuring the safety of our customers and staff, but we have managed to operate to some degree throughout the pandemic, and intend to continue to deal with whatever else it throws at us in the future!”
