RECORDED speeds of vehicles in Sidmouth, Sidford and Sidbury can be less than what residents perceive them to be, according to police.

Town neighbourhood beat manager PC Jim Tyrrell said the two factors were “different entities” when he addressed town councillors’ concerns on dangerous driving.

Councillors had highlighted particular worries on stretches in Sidford and Sidbury.

“We’ve done some speed gathering data in various locations over the past couple of months. The figures have been encouraging,” said PC Tyrrell.

“Actual recorded speeds have been somewhat less than people’s perception. They are different entities.”

PC Tyrell said of driving offences: “If we are there and we see it happen then we will deal with it accordingly. We can’t be in all places at all times.”

At a full council meeting last Monday, Councillor Christine Drew asked for speed checks to be carried out between Sidford and Sidbury once the current roadwork situation “calms down”.

Cllr Jack Brokenshire expressed concern over Sidford Cross and High Street.

“You take your life into your hands trying to cross the road. There’s been quite a few near misses,” he said.

Cllr Mary Jolly wanted speed checks in Sidmouth’s Station Road.
