Group set to complete 108 sun salutations tomorrow

Sidmouth yoga practitioners will be breathing some fresh energy into their group challenge in aid of Sport Relief.

Tom and Louise Hunt, of Jala Flow Yoga in High Street, are hoping to raise people’s spirits – as well as lots of money for the cause – with their ambitious plan to complete 108 sun salutations back-to-back.

The movement forms the basis of most yoga practices, but to complete this many in a row will prove physically and mentally challenging for most.

Participants will gather in the Ladysmith House studio tomorrow (Saturday) at 11.30am and pay a suggested donation of £10 - which will all go to the charity.

Louise said: “As the studio builds, we are always looking for ways to bring our practitioners together. It seems to help enhance the joy of coming to yoga for everyone and brings the community together as a whole. Apart from that, it’s a lot of fun. Doing it in a large group will make this an entirely different experience to the challenges faced if one were to attempt it on their own. The group energy carries you through, and time seems to speed up.”

She explained the number 108 was chosen because of its significance in many cultures and also connects the sun, moon and earth.

Of the total amount of money raised for Sport Relief each year, 50 per cent goes towards making a difference to the lives of people who need it in the UK and the other half is used to help the world’s poorest communities.

As well as raising money for a good cause, Louise and Tom say the challenge will also mark the beginning of spring.
