A LONG-awaited make-over for an overgrown stretch of land that will provide Ottery residents with new sporting facilities took a major step forward last Friday.
The three -acre strip off Strawberry Lane was officially handed back to Ottery town council by the town's Bowling Club after an agreement to nullify a 99 year lease was rubberstamped.
The news means that the council's project to transform the site into a "sporting facility for the town" will now receive a 45,000 cash boost from Devon County Council to "unlock the land" and cover the costs of an access link to it.
Councillors are already considering "exciting" proposals for the site, which is located between the town's cricket and bowling clubs. Interest from an international croquet coach to use it as a training facility has already been lodged.
The town council will now seek planning permission for an access road to the site.
