Pupils from Sidmouth Primary School ‘stomped’ their way out of class at half term in a bid to raise funds for the school playground.

The school Parents Teachers, and Friends Association (PTFA) set the pupils a Sponsored Springtime Stomp challenge to walk, run, hop, cycle or scoot at least one mile during the school break.
The children were encouraged to get out and about in the countryside while raising some funds to go towards refurbishing playground equipment at the Woolbrook Road site. As an extra incentive, the class who travelled the furthest wins a non-uniform day.

The young learners embraced the challenge, clocking up some huge distances. Zach in Badgers class and Freya in Angelfish managed 42 miles, and Mr Smith, Badgers’ teacher, clocked up a huge 61 miles. Some of the children also travelled in some fantastically inventive ways: Ella and Alphie from Ospreys space-hopped in matching sparkly outfits. Lucas from Badgers managed a round of golf while doing his stomp. Harley from Otters kicked a football for part of his mileage and Elliot and Jack, both in Otters, decided to improve the town and did a spot of litter-picking while on their travels.

The pupils had a brilliant time in the sunshine, some stopping for tree climbing, or the odd cartwheel… and a lucky few had an ice-cream along the way!

Mrs Fegan, head of teaching and learning, said: "We are so proud of the efforts the children and families have made to support the stomp over their half term. The new playground equipment is such an exciting cause to be raising money for - it's going to help our children to be even more active, so really fitting that they've helped to fund it by being active too!
“Huge thanks have to go to our PTFA for organising the event, it has been a tricky year for us to raise money with the Covid restrictions but they have not let it stop them and their support is needed more than ever.
“A huge thank you must go to the friends and families of all the Stompers for getting involved and for their generosity – they have raised some fabulous funds for the school.”
