The branch moved from Mill Street to Yonder Street as part of Post Office Ltd’s modernisation programme to improve customer services.

The new facility, based in the town’s McColls store, had suffered set backs due to technological issues but was declared open on Saturday by Mayor Glyn Dobson.

The opening was then followed by refreshments, giveaways and face painting for children.

Cllr Dobson said: “Ottery St Mary will really benefit from a modern Post Office that is open seven days a week from early until late.

“It will really make it more convenient for customers to visit. The branch looks great.”

The town’s branch will be open an additional 59 hours a week and offer additional services including a wider selection of travel money in store.

Suzanne Richardson, regional network manager, said: “We are making it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents.

“We are confident that this vibrant new-style Post Office at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs.

“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and will secure services for the future.”

The Ottery branch is now one of 600 branches across the UK operating from a McColls store.

Dave Thomas, chief operating officer for McColl’s Retail Group, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming customers to our Ottery St Mary store.

“As a convenience store operator we are always looking for ways to make life easier for our customers and the availability of Post Office services throughout the full opening hours of the store will provide an excellent service to the local community.”

The main counters will be open Monday to Saturday: 9am – 5.30pm and open-plan counter alongside the retail till is open Monday to Sunday: 7am – 10pm.
