St John's School in Sidmouth staged an alternative World Book Day.

Jenni Yeoman, head of PE at the independent school, said: “This year saw a change from the usual dressing up as our favourite storybook characters. We decided to focus on the feelings of contentment and escapism that reading gives us (something we all desperately need at the moment).

“The central theme of the day was ‘Hygge’, a Danish and Norwegian word for a feeling of cosiness. Students at home and at school wore their most comfortable clothes, onesies and fluffy pyjamas were very popular! We put open fires up on the whiteboards, drank hot chocolate and curled up with our favourite books.

“The feedback from the students was lovely, they really enjoyed themselves and said how relaxed they felt whilst reading (I think the hot chocolate helped too).”
