A STORM-HIT Sidmouth landmark and path were yesterday back in action for Easter – but another popular attraction will remain off-limits for now.

District council teams and contractors have been hard at work in a bid to get repairs to the Alma Walkway and Jacob’s Ladder completed in time for the holiday. However, the viewing area at Connaught Gardens will remain shut until next month, writes Stefan Gordon.

The Alma Walkway was reopened this week with new fencing rails in place.

Repair work has also been completed to the concrete apron below Jacob’s Ladder. The stairway itself had been closed due to structural damage to the woodwork. A metal brace was fitted on Wednesday and so it would be open yesterday (Thursday).

A weakened wall has had to be demolished for safety reasons at Connaught Gardens – leaving the popular viewing area shut.

Temporary fencing has been put up, but the contractor is still waiting for vital parts to be delivered before the area can be made secure enough for public access.

It is now expected that this work will be completed early in May.
