SIDMOUTH may have escaped the worst of Sunday night's storm, but it still bore the scars of a battering today.

Huge waves and storm condition winds lifted shingle and boulders on to The Esplanade and saucepan turning circle, reaching a group of small boats tethered beside the pedestrian shelters.

Predicted as the worst winter storm so far, with high tides battering Salcombe Cliffs, there were reports of trees being blown down at the Bowd, Sidmouth, Salcombe Regis, Newton Poppleford, Putts Corner and Aylesbeare.

Worst hit along the East Devon coast was Axmouth, which suffered massive flooding when the sea engulfed the River Axe.

East Devon District Council's countryside team was on the scene to check out the situation.
