POLICE are planning to tackle antisocial behaviour at the Land of Canaan over the summer months.

Sergeant Nick Harper said that there has been a history of problems around the play area there and they had been involved in applying to East Devon District Council for an alcohol designation order for the site.

He said: "We've had some problems with low level disorder, underage drinking, drug use and some problems with cars. None of it is high level, but enough to be a problem. This year we have plans to tackle it a bit more head-on and try to go down there more frequently."

An Alcohol Consumption in Designated Places Order had been issued for the Land of Canaan car park, the playground and surrounding footpaths and footbridges, which gives police the power to stop alcohol being drunk there and confiscate alcohol which is not in a sealed container and dispose of it. Anyone found with alcohol on the site could face a fine of up to £500.

A revised order is currently being processed by EDDC at the request of Ottery Town Council, as the original order did not wholly cover the correct area.
