IT IS too soon to know whether this week's decision by a teachers' union to strike over pay, on April 24, will affect any Sidmouth schools. That is the opinion of most headteachers at infant, primary and secondary schools in Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary and Beer and Branscombe. Some 32 per cent of National Union of Teachers members voted on Tuesday by three to one to hold a one day strike just days after most schools return from their Easter break.Steve Sinnott, NUT's general secretary, declared the vote to be "a clear mandate" for strike action. He said: "I urge all members to support the union's call for action on April 24. Fair Pay for Teachers."Sidbury Primary School administrator Alison Pollentine told the Herald: "We have no members, teachers are all in other unions. I don't think it will affect Sidbury school."David Birch, principal at Sidmouth College, and Faith Jarrett, head at King's School, Ottery St Mary, both said it was too soon to know if the call to strike would have any effect.Paul Walker, head of St Nicholas Junior, Sidmouth, said: "We have got some members of the union and if they do decide to take strike action then those classes would not come to school that day."He said it was illegal to obtain teaching cover from supply agencies for industrial action.Mr Walker said he was unlikely to know if any staff would strike until after the school returns from its Easter break on Monday, April 21.
