Ottery Gardening Club say this year’s Spring Show was a great success after a record number of fruitcakes and children’s decorations to go with the flowers on display.

In the Institute on Saturday the town’s green-fingered competitors showed off their garden produce in a host of categories.

Joan Dalton from the club said: “Although we were quite short on flowers it was made up by all the entries in the culinary class by having ten All-in-one Fruit Cakes.

“I think this must be a record!”

But she said the biggest surprise was the amount of ‘wonderful’ entries, around 40 in all, from the children in the decorated paper plates section.

Mrs Dalton said the credit should go to gardening club member Brian Nelson, worked hard to encourage them to enter.

The winners on the day included Sue Marshall, who picked up the Spring Cup, as well the Daffodil Society’s 2nd Best Daffodil Exhibit Certificate, and the OSM Gardening Club Novice Certificate in the Daffodil Section.

Ann House won the Spring Jubilee Cup for most points in classes 19 to 29, and the Salver was won by Mary Frazer for most points in the culinary class.

The Derek Edmonds-Otter Trophy was won by Sue Visser, who also picked up the Daffodil Society’s 3rd Best Daffodil Exhibit Certificate.

Brian Nelson was presented with the Daffodil Society’s Bronze Medal for Best Daffodil Exhibit, plus an RHS Certificate for Best Exhibit in Daffodil Classes.

In the Junior Classes Maisie Loganski won the four years and under category in the decorative plates, with Ryley Gething second and Billy Phillips third.

In the five years and above category Harrison Gill won, with Ben Alford second and Christoper Ross third.

In the poem section, for eight to 11-year-olds, which had to be on the theme of spring, Amy Alford won, with Wolfgang Jollands second and Natasha Ross third.
