Swimmers young and old went the extra mile to raise money for the Admiral Nurse Campaign in this year’s Swimathon.

Participants clocked-up 2,316 lengths in five hours, the equivalent of swimming the River Sid more than five times.

Sidmouth Rotary Club said thank-you to some 200 participants, aged from six to those in their 80s, for their efforts.

Organiser Steve Gunnell said: “Sidmouth Rotary Club would like thank all those who entered and sponsored the Swimathon.

“We would also like to thank LED Leisure for letting us use the pool. It has been a really great effort by all these people, it is quite extraordinary.”

Some 21 teams took to Sidmouth Swimming Pool on Saturday to complete as many lengths as they could in one hour.

Newcomers Sidmouth Surf Life Saving Club set a new record with 174 lengths within the allotted times.

Money raised by the teams will be donated to the Sid Valley Memory Cafe’s Admiral Nurse Campaign to bring a specialist dementia nurse to the area.
