FUNDRaISERS who took the plunge to boost the 1st Sid Vale Scouts’ bid to build a new home have handed over nearly £8,000.

The sterling sum – from the Rotary Club of Sidmouth’s Swimathon – will be splashed on helping to install a power supply to the Salcombe Hill recreational field.

Scout leaders estimate that this project alone, a vital first step in the overall scheme, will cost £22,000.

They also need to raise £200,000 to make their dream of a purpose-built HQ at the site a reality.

The Herald last week launched a campaign to help the valued group stride closer to its target.

A total of 24 teams took part in the Swimathon in aid of the scouts in Ocotber last year.

The five-hour event, which took place in the town’s pool, saw swimmers clock up a total of 2,582 lengths – the equivalent of 40 miles.

Scout leader Nancy Craven gratefully accepted a cheque for £7,963.78 from Rotary club president Barry Chapman last week.

Mr Chapman said: “We believe looking after the youth will benefit the town and that’s why we focussed our major fundraising exercise on them.”

Scout leaders expressed their delight at the total.

l Can you follow the shining example set by the swimmers and boost our campaign?

The Herald is committed to spending the rest of 2013 championing the group - and hopes its generous readers will help them realise their dream.
