The 128 swimmers of all ages in 18 teams clocked up 1,883 lengths of the 25-metre pool – and for the competitive participants among them, there will be a trophy available next year.

The greatest distance was covered by the Memory Café Marvels, who swam 145 lengths, followed by the St John’s School seniors at 144 lengths.

Sidmouth Running Club members proved they are also good in the water, swimming 134 lengths, while golfers swapped their clubs
for swimming costumes to clock up 126 lengths.

A team of reporters from the Herald also took part, completing a grand total of 106 lengths.

Proceeds from the Rotary Club of Sidmouth event will go to Friends of Sidholme, which is giving free musical workshops for young people, as well as Sidmouth Hospiscare and the Admiral Nurse campaign.

Nigel Sharp, who thought up the event nine years ago, said: “We’ve given
money to all sorts of good causes over that time – the swimathon must have brought in £70,000. We’re very pleased and proud to do it.”

He also said that he was pleased to see new entries from the Care Quality Commission, the Victoria Hotel, Sidmouth Gospel Choir and the Sid Valley Probus Club.

New teams are always welcome, he added.
