SIDMOUTH residents are being urged to join a world-wide switching off of lights next Saturday.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) wants a billion people to switch off their lights for an hour on March 28, at 8.30pm, to send a message to political leaders due to attend the UN climate change summit in Copenhagen this December.

If left unchecked, climate change could lead to the extinction of up to 30 percent of the world's species. But, says research by WWF, there is time to avoid the worst.

It wants people to use the hour of darkness to raise funds for its vital programmes to tackle climate change, suggesting candle-lit suppers, pay-to-play torch lit party games or star-gazing with telescope fees.

Derek Chant told fellow members of the Seafront Action Group, part of the Vision for Sidmouth Group, about the switch-off when they met on Wednesday.
