A GROUP of musicians and singers will conduct the first ever Taiz church service at Sidford on Sunday, incorporating prayer, song and music.

With a "vacant slot" on the fifth Sunday of the month, it was at the suggestion of the Reverend Rik Peckham that the group fill the void at St Peter's Church with some form of service.

Kathy Butler, who will play flute, had already come up with a service of meditation with music and prayers, said Glynn Lewis, who will play guitar on the day.

Glynn and his wife Jenny, who live in Manstone Lane, will join Angela Bea (cello) and singers from Newton Poppleford for the service, which will start at St Peter's at 6.30pm.

"People want to come to a quiet service," said Jenny. "It will be held at the back of the church with chairs arranged in a semi-circle."

If the Taiz service proves popular, it is hoped it will become a regular feature at Sidford.

Those taking part already know one another.

Jenny explained: "We meet once a month as a group at Newton Poppleford for pleasure and spiritual nourishment.
