A Sidmouth teenager, who is battling a benign brain tumour, has embarked on a 100-day challenge in aid of a cancer charity.

Charlotte Reid aims walk 200 miles in aid of Richard’s Wish, a Dawlish-based cause that grants wishes for children and young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Charlotte, 15, started her challenge last week, but faced a setback when she was rushed to hospital with a lung infection.

“Over the 100 days I aim to walk two miles-a-day, but I need to build myself up to it and if it rains we will make up for it. I will do the 200 miles.”

The Sidmouth College pupil will be accompanied by her mum, Angela, and dog, Alfie, in a bid to improve her fitness and raise £200 for the charity.

She has already raised more than £120 online and Facebook users can chart her progress using the Map My Walk app on her page, Charlotte’s Dreams – A Sidmouth Girl.

Richard’s Wish was set up by the family of Richard Cridge, who died in 2008 after losing his battle to Ewings sarcoma.

Charlotte, of High Street, Sidford, said she wanted to raise cash for the cause after the charity paid for an iPad Air for her to use while she was in hospital in the United States.

The keen dancer was able to use the device to keep herself entertained and to keep in touch with friends and family.

Charlotte added: “The larger charities are amazing and we support them as well, but the smaller charities like Richard’s Wish support the individual instantly, which has a very positive effect.”

Charlotte was diagnosed with craniophraryngioma in June last year and travelled to the United States with her parents, Steve and Angela, to undergo proton beam treatment.

The GCSE pupil discovered that she had the rare condition after a routine visit to the optician.

Since returning in November, Charlotte has been focusing on her exams and uses the iPad to ‘blow up’ text, as the tumour has caused her to be short-sighted.

Charlotte’s mum Angela said: “They [Richard’s Wish] really go out of their way to help. They did a Christmas party which we went to and every child got a £50 gift card. To also see children who are suffering from cancer see Father Christmas was very emotional to watch.”

Rachel Cridge, of Richard’s Wish, said: “It means so, so much to us that Charlotte is supporting Richard’s Wish. With thanks to people like Charlotte and her friends and family who sponsor her, we are able to make these wishes and dreams come true.”
